El día de ayer, 21 de junio, debutó al público en general de Estados Unidos Transformers: El Último Caballero (Transformers: The Last Knight), la quinta película de ciencia ficción y acción de imagen real con gráficos generados por computadora. Para celebrar este hecho y como todavía falta un mes para que se estrene aquí en México, vamos hablando de la franquicia en general y escuchemos sus soundtracks.
Transformers empezó como una línea de juguetes de Hasbro. Esta compañía en realidad mezcló las marcas de juguetes japoneses Diaclone y Microman de Takara y la renombró, comenzándolos a vender en 1984, el mismo año en el que la primer serie animada para la televisión apareció en Estados Unidos. Hasbro contrató a Jim Shooter y Dennis O’Neil para que crearan la historia de estos juguetes (O’Neil creó a Optimus Prime y Bob Budiansky creó la gran mayoría de personajes de Transformers, dándoles nombres y personalidades a varias de las figuras de Diaclone que no tenían apelativos).
La trama central, para quien no la conozca, trata sobre facciones de robots extraterrestres transformables, principalmente los Autobots y los Decepticons que están en guerra con el fin de encontrar la paz o la conquista. Aparte de la televisión y cine, han aparecido en cómics y videojuegos.
La primer cinta de imagen real, simplemente titulada Transformers, fue dirigida por Michael Bay, estrenándose en el 2007 y convirtiéndose en un éxito de taquilla. Gracias a esto, la saga continuó con Bay en la silla del director en el 2009 con Transformers: La Venganza de los Caídos (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen), después Transformers: El lado oscuro de la luna (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) en el 2011, terminando una trilogía. La cuarta cinta, titulada Transformers: La era de la extinción (Transformers: Age of Extinction), tuvo su premier en el 2014.
