El día de hoy marca el 40 Aniversario de Superman, la película de este superhéroe de DC Comics de 1978 dirigida por Richard Donner y protagonizada por Christopher Reeve. Para festejar a esta cinta, vamos recordando unos datos interesantes acerca de ella y de los siguientes filmes de imagen real con este personaje hasta Batman vs. Superman: El origen de la justicia / Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) para después escuchar el soundtrack de estos largometrajes.
Superman, por su puesto, cuenta el origen del héroe titular, desde que es enviado siendo un bebé desde su moribundo planeta Krypton hacia la Tierra, pasando por su crecimiento al lado de sus padres adoptivos terrestres, el descubrimiento de su herencia kriptoniana y su transfromación en el superhéroe que todos conocemos.
Cuando debutó hace cuarenta años, esta película fue la más cara de la historia con un presupuesto de 55 millones de dólares. Afortunadamente el producto final gustó a la crítica especializada y al público en general, siendo incluso nominada a tres Premios Óscar (incluyendo el de Mejor Banda Sonora), y lanzando al estrellato a Reeve. Fue la segunda cinta más taquillera en Estados Unidos de ese año, solo derrotada por Vaselina (Grease).
Como era de esperarse, se comenzó a trabajar en secuelas. La primera, Superman II, arribó dos años después, también recibiendo buenas críticas. Superman III (1983) no fue tan exitosa como las dos anteriores, pero generó el suficiente entusiasmo para que en 1987 llegara Superman IV: En busca de la paz (Superman IV: The Quest for Peace). Desafortunadamente, ésta última si fue un fracaso de crítica y comercial, considerada por muchos como una de las peores películas de todos los tiempos.
Pasarían casi dos décadas para que Warner Bros. produjera otro filme de acción viva, ya que en el 2006 se estrenó Superman Regresa (Superman Returns), largometraje creado como homenaje/secuela de Superman y Superman II, descartando la tercer y cuarta película. Cuando esta nueva cinta tuvo un decente éxito en taquilla, el resultado decepcionó al estudio y su continuación fue cancelada.
En el 2013 se proyectó en las salas de cine El hombre de acero (Man of Steel), la nueva propuesta de WB que reinicia la saga y que gracias a sus ganancias en la taquilla, comenzó el Universo Extendido de DC (DCEU por sus siglas en inglés), continuando la trama en Batman vs. Superman: El origen de la justicia.
